Film Project Genre Research- Groundhog Day

In the film  Groundhog Day , not too much is told within the first few minutes, although it establishes the main character and his setting,  in particular working  his job as a news anchor and weatherman before Groundhog Day.   However, it does establish any conflict. Some camera shots include the  close up  of the main protagonist's hand as he works as a weatherman,   and a zoom- out to mid shot, showing the actor under a blue screen . The opening also c uts between him on screen as weatherman, to him behind the blue screen, indicating how he completes his job as he acts in front of the screen to create the product on television.   The camera also r otates to him moving towards anchor  seat, and  provides a  two- shot with him and a co-anchor.   In the change in scene, there is an aerial shot of the city, a long shot of the car, and another aerial shot, possibly with a track, of the weatherman's car driving through the suburbs...

Film Project Genre Research- Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

In the first two minutes of  Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery , not much of the story is told. It only introduces an individual, presumably the main character, running through the town as he is interacting with and being chased by his  fans. The  opening was introduced with a zoom in at his feet, zoom out at a  mid shot  showing his character and some  background, and  a zoom outward to show a wide shot to show him interacting with the people around him in addition to some background. The rule of thirds is used to provide space for credits and allow the human eye to naturally gravitate towards the subject. The shots often tend to freeze, showing Austin Powers ridiculous expression or body language, such as the freezing of the closeup when he wanted to photograph the models, or when he jumped during the introduction of the title. The sound portrays cheerful, silly music that keeps the viewer engaged and entertained. Other background noise inc...

Film Project Genre Research- Memento

When studying the opening scene of Memento , a thriller and suspense film, some aspect of the story is provided to the reader, although it may be somewhat confusing. It seems to show that a man, presumably a significant character, shot and killed a man. However, the time sequence is seen going backwards, from receiving the polaroid photo of the murder scene to the moment he opened fire. This seems to be an extremely crucial event for the plot, but the viewer still does not know what circumstances led him to this point. The scene first contains a long take, which allows viewers to understand the depth of the situation. Later, a slightly quicker pace of next shots add suspense. A point-of-view shot shows the man holding the photo of the murder scene. There are also some close-ups of man's face and the backside of the one he murdered. In addition, there are several inserts of the props including the photo, gun, glasses, and a bullet. The sound expresses somber, sorrowful, and grave ...

Film Project Genre Research- My Cousin Vinny

Within the opening scene of My Cousin Vinny , not much of the story is told within the first few minutes. Two characters, presumably the most significant characters of the movie, are seen traveling in a car. However, the viewer is unaware of exactly where the characters are going and why. The first scene includes camera shots and edits containing wide and long shots of the car and the two characters, in addition to two-shots and over-the-shoulder shots of the characters observing their surroundings as they are driving. There is also an insert of the license plate. The camera documents slightly longer takes, pans and zooms in to landmarks and a college handbook in the trunk of the car. There is also an eyeline match of the characters reading the signs on the road. Not to mention there are many areas where the opening scene utilizes the rule of thirds, in particular to place their titles and provide an appealing placement for the viewer to see the object, such as the car moving on the ...

Film Project Genre Research- Zoolander

In Zoolander 's first few minutes, the potential agonists and conflict of the plot were introduced. In this case, it included individuals that were conspiring a sinister plan, and need someone to manipulate. One man begins to describe the type of person that they may need to make that plan work, and the filming immediately cuts to the interview of Zoolander. A general background of this character is understood with this scene and the cut shows the viewer that Zoolander is the type of self-absorbed, shallow, dim-witted person that could be easily manipulated. An important foundation of the plot is created in the opening scene, although there are still crucial elements that have yet to be shown. Derek Zoolander's persona can also be identified from his career, fame from testimonials, and general popularity. The opening scene included several wide-shots, mid-shots, and two-shots of characters, in particular with the potential antagonists and the interviewer. Many close-ups of ...

Project Selection- My Decision

I have finally decided to choose the film project for my AICE Media Studies course. I enjoy creating and producing, and I also enjoy collaborating with others. This film requires analyzing and researching other films of a certain genre, and applying those characteristics to one's own film opening. It also requires thorough planning for a script, a shotlist, and a storyboard, in addition to scouting locations, casting characters, and scheduling the film. The final product will be an opening of a film that will contain these important components while conveying a message to the audience, in a way that may be similar to other film openings of its genre. The genre will most likely be either drama or action. I will be working with Maya Rudo as my partner for the project. Together we will be organizing the production of the opening, in which one of us might help develop key ideas and details while the other might help organize and execute the production of the film.

Project Selection- Film

I found the aspects of film production to be intriguing by studying the production of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. By understanding the steps they had to take and the struggles they faced, I had a better perspective on the world of film making. I think the film project would be a good fit for me because I enjoy creating and producing. I also enjoy collaborating with a team and we can share our ideas to produce a better project, compared to only using ideas from one person. However, it is sometimes easier for me to write an article, whereas producing something creative such as a film or a narrative requires a lot of time and energy to be dedicated to brainstorming. Compared to other projects, it is quite challenging for me to make and organize something made completely from scratch. In addition, communication and organization among different people could be difficult. Our team would be playing different roles, and in some cases those roles may be imbalanced depending on how much energy...

Project Selection- Magazine

I found the aspect of writing specialized articles, which I studied from our Magazine Analysis and the Blog Samples, to be intriguing because many issues were formatted in ways where I had the passion and knowledge to write something I could be interested in. The magazine project would be a good fit because it is easier for me to write articles that are informational and persuasive. Content for the film project, such as scripts and stories, are much more difficult for me to create and organize. The magazine project would also be a good fit for me because I view myself to be a more independent worker. This project, compared to producing a film, can be accomplished independently. However, even if I do work with others, I still have the ability to focus and reinforce on my own ideas in a different issue of the magazine while still considering and applying the ideas of my teammates. On the other hand, the magazine project could be challenging because I could be working completely by mys...
